Laptop Lunches; Awesome Reusable Lunch Kits for Everyone Review & Reader Discount Code

About Laptop Lunches

"Tammy Pelstring and Amy Hemmert met one day at the park in 1995 when they found themselves involved in the same new mothers group. As they got to know each other, they realized that they shared an interest in nutrition, fitness, and the environment. Within a year they had become good friends as well as jogging partners.

When their children entered school, they continued jogging together, often talking about their interests and experiences as volunteers at their children's schools. Of particular interest was the poor-quality school lunches the children brought from home--processed foods high in fat, sodium, and sugar, packaged in wasteful, single-use containers that filled the trash cans and cost a fortune to haul away.

Then, during a morning jog in the fall of 2001 they realized that the best way to help parents pack wholesome, low-waste lunches was to provide them with a lunch system that was not only convenient and economical, but also appealing to kids.

That's when they started thinking about designing, manufacturing, patenting, and selling Laptop Lunches.

They conducted a national survey and found strong support for their idea. At the same time national headlines on childhood obesity, poor nutrition, and the impact of landfill waste indicated that this was a product whose time had come.

In the winter of 2001, Obentec, Inc. was founded with the mission of helping families improve lunchtime nutrition and reduce waste. And since the two moms believe that healthy kids come from healthy communities, they donate a portion of profits to schools and environmental organizations.

Tammy and Amy continue to jog together. Now, in addition to talking about their volunteer experiences, they discuss company-related issues, business strategies, and how to achieve their goal of changing the way Americans pack lunch."

My Opinion

This review was exciting because it was for the boys. When the package arrived they couldn't wait for me to open it. Inside were two brand new lunchboxes just for them. Identical of course (this way no one fights over who gets what). These lunchboxes are ideal for kids, parents, and anyone who is on the go and doesn't want to create extra garbage and waste or waste money on eating out all of the time.

The basic idea behine this luchbox is to create fun, practical food containers that promote better nutrition and waste reduction. The lunchbox system eliminates the need for plastic bags, plastic utensils, and disposable drink containers. It helps you to make nutritious lunches without adding to the waste problem. I love the design with the individual food containers. It makes it so easy to pack leftovers from the previous night’s dinner and also to add a variety of foods so that my son can get the most nutrition from his lunches. And there are lids too so I can make sure that foods don’t mix. There is even a tiny little container and lid for sauces, dressings, dips, and other tiny dabs of condiments.

The lunch container is designed to hold food horizontally, but the lunch bag then holds the inserted container vertically, so food gets shifted around quite a bit if you don't store the bag horizontally until lunch so it can "settle" back down and  the different foods will combine (if you do not use the lids). All the little insert pieces can tend to get lost (especially by small children, although we have not had any issues) and since they offer replacement pieces on their website, this obviously happens often. Since many people include a sandwich in their lunch, it’s fortunate that the sandwich can be cut in half and slid into the  sandwich compartment (no lid required to keep it in place. The sizes offered do not hold an excessive amount of food or whole pieces of fruit which is great for small children or even small eaters.

My boys had a little bit of trouble getting the lids to cooperate with their hands because they are tight fitting which is both a plus and a minus, but a little smidgen of oil around the mouths of the containers solved this dilemma for us, plus the teachers at school would give them a hand. They love taking their lunch to school now because they get to decide what to have for lunch and if we forget to make lunch the night before it's a nightmare. I hear the "What if they make something I don't like, I'll starve!" or they cry until we whip something together real quick to bring for lunch.

The only real issue I found was that it was difficult to get the actual lunch system to close tightly. The lids from from the containers can get in the way if they aren't arranged "correctly" so to speak. Overall, I give this lunch system 3 1/2 stars out of 5, only because of the difficulty of working the system. I do however still recommend this Lunch box set because the kids love it and it has never been easier to pack healthier options for them without creating excessive waste. The price is a little more then I feel they are really worth. They retail for $43.99/each. If you were to purchase yourself one (or for your children) I would get just the Bento Box Set which retails for $27.99 without the insulated bag.
